CBS Deploys SENCORE's MRD3187 Receiver Decoder to Deliver News Programming on Location at Super Bowl XLIV

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.  Feb. 11, 2010  SENCORE, an engineering leader in high-quality signal transmission, today announced that its MRD3187 receiver decoder was deployed by CBS for the remote broadcasts of The Early Show and CBS Weekend News programs leading up to Super Bowl XLIV.

The award-winning SENCORE MRD3187  paired with the Fujitsu IP-9500 HD high-performance encoder  provided MPEG-4 AVC compressed live HD feeds for the CBS Weekend News program from Sun Life Stadium in Miami to the CBS studios in New York. The feeds were then decoded back to HD baseband video for real-time editing before being recompressed for broadcast. The SENCORE decoder and Fujitsu encoder were also responsible for the network’s live news coverage while on location at Lummus Park in South Beach, Fla.

“The Super Bowl is one of our biggest events of the year, and the technology we deploy throughout the weekend — for live news programming and Game Day coverage  must deliver a high-quality HD picture with the lowest possible delay,” said Mel Olinsky, director of operations at CBS Evening News. “The SENCORE-Fujitsu decoder/encoder combination allowed us to meet our requirements for picture and enhance the viewing experience for football fans around the world.”

“CBS continues to rely on SENCORE and Fujitsu to encode and decode video feeds from its live events, where low delay is critical,” said Jack Vickers, product manager at SENCORE. “This particular pairing offers the best combination of low latency picture quality and MPEG HD encoding and decoding, giving CBS studios in New York the ability to interact with remote report sites in seemingly real time.”

SENCORE’s MRD3187 receiver decoder supports innumerable applications by combining dual-channel processing capability with MPEG-2, MPEG-4, 4:2:0, SD, and HD video decoding. The versatile MRD3187 adapts to virtually any contribution, distribution, or backhaul environment, and sets the standard for performance, scalable functionality, and cost of ownership. The Fujitsu IP-9500 is the industry’s leading AVC/H.264 encoding solution for real-time broadcast quality contribution content. The IP-9500’s exceptional picture quality at low bit rates and low-latency enables HD satellite news gathering (SNG) and live events transmission using existing broadcast satellite infrastructure.
